SPN Review: 4x08

How the hell are we at 4x08 already?! I actually can't believe I'm typing 8.

- I'm aware this was just in the recap, but I've been thinking that Cas' threat to throw Dean back into hell doesn't really fit with the compassionate and questioning side we saw last week. I'm going to chalk it up to him having a bad day.

- Before the ep turned down the funny route, I was facepalming over another woman being struck down in the shower. Do we think Kripke's secretely a bath-extremist? Also, totally called the hand print *fist pump*

- Haha, people should throw towels over "ghosts" more often.

- I'm so pleased they launched into a discussion over Uriel's statement right away. I was preparing myself to wait for that. I'm more accepting of no fallout from Sam using his powers again, because not only have we already had an episode of Dean freaking out, I do honestly believe Dean's starting to turn around on them considering his conversation with Castiel at the end. So it makes sense to brush that under the carpet...for now.

- I feel the biggest letdown of this episode was that the waiter was only in the boys' first scene *g* wasn't he awesome and oh so gleeful? Even his buttons flashed! I believe Dean and I were making the same faces every time he spoke.

- I really did try to take these hell conversations seriously, really I did, but down under? Seriously? Could we not have come up with a better nickname boys? Or better still, why not just call it hell? Considering the things I say when I'm sitting in restaurants, I don't think you'd turn too many heads.

- I like that Dean's still on DENY DENY DENY mode, instead of caving at the first push (more on that later). It's interesting to look at his posture, how hunched in on himself he is, while Sam's open and reaching out with his arms quite far toward Dean across the table. I'm getting flashes of 2x04 when Sam begged Dean to let him help with their father's death. Oh boys.

- We're being treated so much recently, I mean that's Dean almost in a single layer again. Nom nom nom Dean.

- Bwahaha, Dean spitting his beer back out. So noble.

- Hee! Sam, you're rubbish *snugs* though you are rather amusing in your befuddlement.

- It's intriguing that Sam would call his book Supernatural. Now I have this image in my head of the series ending with a much older ~~Dean~~ Sam telling the Winchester tale to his grandchildren - though perhaps, a heavily downplayed and sparklised version.

- That's some excessive staring you've got going on there, Sam. I'm a tad frown-ey face that show is pretty much saying a hot girl would never go for a less attractive guy, or vice versa. Shallow much, show? I don't feel the need to rant about it however, because I myself get quite annoyed when people take stuff like that on the show too seriously (see: the giant debate on Dean being a sexist bastard *eyeroll*).

- It's nice rewatching the episode and noticing the flash of the lottery winner in the newspaper and Todd being chased by the bullies before they actually become relevant.

- As soon as bigfoot was mentioned, I was calling trickster. It's nice to be wrong. It's also nice to see the boys make so many WTF faces in the one episode.

- I do like when they walk so close together, they keep accidentally brushing against one another *happy sigh*

- Head-turning in sync FTW! Knee-brushing when sitting down FTW!

- The continued use of Busty Asian Beauties makes me gleeful.

- TEDDY BEAR DOCTORS?! BWAHAHA! BEST COVER EVER! This is when the episode picks up for me, before this it was just okay.

- LMFAO! GIANT TEDDY! BOYS WTF FACES! GIANT TEDDY! DEAN! SAM! HA!

- I think Audrey's the best kid we've had on the show, though she's in tight competition with Todd for the spot. Can I only be here for tea parties too?

- I may have nearly died through the "killing teddy" scene. Like actually almost stopped breathing laughing kind of dead. If I thought Ben's last episode was ridiculous...

- Sam's pretty.

- Oh I love the confirmation that Sam doesn't want to go back to his old life. He's changed so much since season one and it's funny that Dean still seems half oblivious to it in that he still believes that's the life Sam wants, that Sam will one day ditch him to go back to it. I like to think this also hints that Sam couldn't leave Dean now either, though I do still want ~~a declaration of platonic love and devotion~~ Sam's take on life without Dean.

- Dean said Sammy! I feel like it's been forever since he's called him that, though I doubt it actually is. I most likely just can't remember.

- It's interesting that Sam would wish for Lilith dead, rather than Dean not going to hell in the first place. I suppose if Sam's still operating on the mindset that Dean doesn't remember anything, it makes sense considering he's already got his brother back. It just strikes me as a tad odd, is all. It also throws away my conclusions from 4x06 that Sam was perhaps letting go of that need for revenge. Oh Sammy. It seems you've really taken up your father's mantle now, pursuing a demon for killing someone you loved. Dean looks kind of disappointed. Wonder what he thought Sam would say?

- Hee Dean *snugs*

- You jab him in the shoulder Sam, you jab him. Naughty boy.

- Pretty, pretty, pretty Dean. Even if you were just throwing up, which eewwwwww! It's nice to have Dean being research boy for a change.

- *dies again* I can't believe I'm sitting cackling over a teddy bear attempting suicide. BRAIN CANNOT COMPUTE! The puff of fluff was truly inspired, Edlund.

- Dean looks wrecked on waking, oh petal *snuggles very tightly* nice continuity that Dean's still sleeping at odd times to presumably avoid resting until he absolutely has to. I'm glad Sam says he's picked up on it *pats him on the head* I was worrying he'd been so wrapped up in the powers that he'd been oblivious. Though the drinking's a new one. I don't recall noticing Dean's excessive drinking except from 4x06. Can anyone confirm?

- That's the second time Dean's said an extended please and Sam's caved (even though the earlier time it was only temporarily). I like it, show. Is this your subtle way of saying Sam can't really say no to Dean and would do anything for his brother? Oh Dean, the way his face changes from smiling to morose as soon as Sam starts talking about the job *snuggles again*

- EXTENDED BROTHER STARING FTW! It's especially exciting when both boys look so pretty!

- Hope reminds me of an older whatsherface from that Disney wizards show...this and my miley cyrus lookalike last week may be a sign I'm passively watching the Disney Channel too much (in that my sister's always watching it and I ended up seeing many, many snatches of the shows). Also, this devotion's creepy. They should take tips from the Winchesters: Adorable Devotion 101.

- Should we be amused that Ben Edlund, who used to work on Angel, named his geeky guy, who got the girl (and then lost the girl soon after), Wes?

- The boys are standing very close together again *yay arms* also, if they're teddy bear doctors on Thursdays, does that mean that's their true job description?

- I love that Dean feels the need to lean closer to Sam to get a better look. Their heads are practically touching.

- Oh Sam, I do love it when you're all badass. That scene where you suddenly appear behind Gordon with the gun in Hunted will live in my memory forever.

- BOYS TALKING IN UNISON! I love the back-and-forth between the boys and how they present their argument together, as opposed to properly taking turns to chat to Wes. What I love most though is Dean mentioning they have to fight to keep what they've got when we know all they've got is each other *draws hearts*

- *kneels before Todd*

- Are we supposed to draw parallels between Todd and the bullies, and Dean and the demons? It's just the way Todd says, "every day, every day, you do not know what it's like," and, "couldn't stop them, couldn't do anything." I'm guessing this is where Dean's supposed to have his turnaround, to decide he'll tell Sam. I'm just afraid you didn't quite pull it off Ben, sorry. Dean didn't act affected enough for this to be his turning point.

- Mwahaha, Dean you're such a geek. You were going to Spiderman him? That punch sounded sore.

- I was so shocked when Sam got struck by lightning (*snorts*). Then I got quite anxious Dean was going to find him before they fixed it *whimpers* I don't think my fragile heart could take another scene of Dean sobbing over a dead Sammy.

- Dean with children *glee hands*

- Awwww Wes *snuggles* you really have a thing for making us feel for the "bad guy", dontcha Ben?

- Dean smiling and waving at Audrey *glee hands*

- BZUH *is bewildered* now? We're having this conversation now? There's virtually no build-up to Dean deciding to come clean and to me, it feels like it came from the left field with no warning. Don't get me wrong, the scene in itself is brilliantly done. I just would have preferred more angst-ing before the big reveal. I can see what they were going for: a recreation of 2x04 where the boys argued over there being something wrong with Dean and Sam pushing him to talk until Dean eventually gives in during the last scene. That too was shocking, I could hardly believe it when those first words fell from Dean's lips, but the difference there was that Sam had known for three episodes (including 2x04) and had been pushing for Dean to talk for three episodes, so it felt like a natural progression when Dean finally admitted how torn up he was. This is especially true considering how well tied-in Dean's feelings were to that particular episode. Here, we're missing that connection between myth and motw (save slightly Todd, which was barely dwelt on) and Sam's only been pushing for two scenes from our viewpoint, so it's rather odd and bewildering when Dean chooses to come clean at the end. It could of course be pointing to Dean realising how destructive keeping secrets from each other has been in the past, but since he doesn't allude to that at all, we've not got much to go on as to why Dean did what he did. So a little disappointing, if I'm honest.

- Saying that, I love the scene in itself. Jensen and Jared play it beautifully and I love the little insight into how broken Dean actually is, especially because of how he asks Sam if it'll heal him. Oh Dean. I must admit, I'm still confused as to how Dean can still be functioning, never mind pretty normal, if he remembers everything from hell (especially, as like I said, we haven't noticed much save the occasional flashes and the odd sleeping patterns). I adore the parallels they draw with Sam though. Dean pretty much tells Sam almost exactly what Sam said to Dean about his powers; that's there's something "inside" him that Sam won't understand and that he can't make Sam understand. I'm hoping this won't broaden the gap between them, but help bridge it in that they're both isolated due to something and they need to agree to disagree in both cases, and unite to stay afloat of both.

- It's rather heartbreaking when both boys look set to cry at the same time. I love how upset Sam looks at Dean's words. He's so calm and controlled sometimes in the face of Dean's pain, that I adore when they pull that back and show just how much Dean actually does mean to him *snuggles both boys incredibly tightly*

There was so much to love here and it's such a quotable episode, and yet, I'm left not as squeeful as I have been for others. There was something not quite right about it, something missing, and I think I'll blame that on the non-existant link between the mytharc and the motw (and perhaps my anxiety at all these funny episodes in a row; are we using the comedy quota up now so we can delve knee-deep in angst soon). However, that being said, it was still an excellent episode. Do not forget this is season 4 and even the slightly less awesome eps are better than the majority of the rest of the series so :) our standards of what is good and bad have changed dramatically since last season. I can already say I'm liking season 4 better than my old fav season 2, and that's us only 8 episodes in. God show, how far you've come!

Also, for all those on my flist who are members of spnfencentral, I'm so sorry for the lack of news last night! This is what happens when I'm out all day, my brain forgets. I'll apologize in my next news post obviously, but felt I should at least say something here, cos I feel bad about it.

ETA: OMG have you guys seen the ratings for last night?! 3.73 million! Oh show!!! There's still a chance we'll drop, but hopefully not by much!

Uni Wi-fi

I'm on the qmu's wi-fi at the moment on my laptop. I may or may not be a tad more excited by this than I should be. However, spoiling my enthusiasm is the damn slowness of it! It's like, "OMG I HAVE TO OPEN TWO PAGES AT ONCE *FLAILS WILDLY*"

*headdesk* I don't have the patience for this.

In other news, wheeee I'm going to see the fireworks tonight! I shouldn't actually be posting here as once again I'm essay writing, but still! Mkay, going now.

SPN Review: 4x07

Look at my icon! Castiel's true purpose revealed!

I feel I should warn you, since this is the first time we've seen Cas since episode 3, my recap on his first scene may be made up entirely of me flailing crazily. Just saying.

- I'm not going to dwell on the razor blades except to say SERIOUSLY SHOW?! Owww and ewww! There's chocolate in the fridge and I feel disturbed at the prospect of eating it. HOW CAN THIS BE?!

- I'm still taken aback every time the new credits crash onto the screen, not in awe, but mostly, "oh, it's these ones." They strike me as odd, I like them, but they're odd.

- I was totally amused by Dean checking the oven on first watch. I was with the wife, what the hell would be in the oven?! Clearly the boys are much smarter than me.

- HEX BAG! IT MUST BE WITCHES! Again. I do love recurring themes. By powers of deduction, I predict that we're due one more witch episode before the end of the series (three vampire eps, three shapeshifter eps...). Though one does wonder if the mention of the witch from the Wizard of Oz last week counts? Hmm.

- Dean has no fear, man (see: first comment on razor blades). Also, I'm bemused by the way he says, "It's Halloween, man." I keep getting Chad Michael Murray flashes and I DONT...KNOW...WHY!

- I have mastered the powers of credit avoiding. I had to make a point of looking back to see a) what the exact title was and b) who the writer was. Hell, if I wasn't spoiled for Castiel (WHEE) this week, I would probably not have noticed Misha's name.

- I adore Dean in green, and they've been treating me these last few eps. God he's pretty.

- Anyone else think the roasted brunette looked like an older Miley Cyrus? I think it was only in the initial shot of her, but once the seed was planted...

- I was totally expecting a repeat of the razor blades in the apples, so I spent most of that scene as I did the first: behind my hands. Dibs for doing something different show, I thought you were opting for another drowning. Gross blisters *shudders* note to self, never eat candy or bob for apples, got it?

- Hee, Dean, you're such a man!whore, and Sam knows it.

- I heart snarky!Dean so epically, particularly his leprechaun comment. Leprechauns should totally be on the show. Dean would be giddy, Castiel would be bemused and Sam would role his eyes repeatedly. What's not to love? Julie Siege is ticking all my Dean boxes (and she totally ticks all my Castiel boxes too). Very nice job for a first timer (I think). She can write again *nod nod* man, I'm pretty much typing out all of Dean's comments in this scene, they're wicked!

- Did I mention that I love when Supernatural sets up epic situations like a "slaughter house"? Because I do *glee hands*

- Dean's gorgeous, have you noticed? The lighting in the motel room and that shirt and JENSEN nom nom nom!

- Hee, I think Sam went where I did with Dean's admission he'd choose a hot cheerleader *snorts*

- A violent altercation. That was a bit of a big phrase for me at 6 in the morning, show, though that's hardly your fault. Technically I should have been watching it at 9pm. Oh and Jerome, what a name.

- The hell soundbites freaked me out more than the flashes we've had previously. Do we think that's what demons look like in hell? On a related note, I wonder if Dean's sleeping properly yet and how often he 'remembers'. I know it's not something one could easily forget, but I'd imagine if he thought about it constantly, he wouldn't be functioning at all. Which is another thing; I've noticed a few people questioning just how much Dean remembers...um, didn't we find out last week that he remembers everything? Have you forgotten or are you just loathe to believe anything even a fake demon says? I do agree though, if Dean does remember everything, how he's still so normal completely befuddles me.

- Naww, look at Sam's fond smile at Dean's bong glee *snuggles boys*

- I wonder if Don was named after the sound guy, Donald. I liked him, till he went all evil on us.

- Evil astronaut child! Now I'm having Jensen Eye of the Tiger flashbacks (the bit where he shoots both his arms out to the left), cos he reminds me of Buzz Lightyear when he does that.

- Pause Sam as he bursts in the door. No seriously. Sam in-action is hilarious!

- CAS! *SQUEALS* it has been FAR too long. Yes, you're still just as pretty as you were since last we saw you (OMG, like a month ago! Never again Kripke.).

- You know what I love? That Cas makes a point of saying hi to Sam, that Sam totally fangirls the angels, that Cas pauses before choosing to take Sam's hand and that he covers Sam's hand with both of his in a caring gesture, instead of being repulsed by the demonic blood coursing through his veins, as I'm sure Uriel would have been.

- So the angels know Sam's promised to stop using his powers. I wonder how much Cas listens to/watches them? Look, he even holds onto Sam's hand for probably a little longer than is necessary. Oh shush, I'm still riding on the Castiel high.

- Hee, I know I've said it before, but when Misha crosses the room, it's really obvious how tiny he is compared to Jensen and Jared. He really could fit in my pocket, right? I'm having trouble recapping this scene, I keep letting it play out instead of pausing to type my thoughts. Ha, thoughts.

- The placement of Uriel is brilliant. I love that he keeps interjecting without even bothering to turn around. I also like that for all Dean may have a little respect for and be willing to listen to Castiel, Uriel simply being an angel too doesn't win him any points from Dean *hearts Dean* you have to earn his trust, Uriel. I love that, it's so Dean.

- Cas seems so reluctant when he introduces Uriel to the boys, like he's forcing himself to go through with it. I thought this before the end scene but that's only re-enforced the idea: Cas' entire body language just screams that he's not happy with this plan, that he's perhaps even uncomfortable being in Uriel's presence considering the angel's function (which, OMG show, we're really going places this season, aren't we). Despite defending the plan when Dean challenges it, initially as Dean starts ranting (after the metal teeth chomp), Cas seems to have shrunk into himself, eyes fixed to the floor.

- You know what else I love? That Cas still hasn't learned about personal space, or excessive staring, which Dean seems to no longer have any problem with. I like that Castiel doesn't break Dean's gaze, even when Sam is adressing him about finding the witch. He's struck a chord with Dean and he knows it, oh Dean *snugs*

- Mud monkey's?! Bwahaha!

- Look how upset Castiel looks as he turns away. I wonder if it's simply because he hates appearing so cold-hearted or whether he realises the impact their behaviour is having on Sam's faith, and to an extent on Dean's faith, at least in Cas.

- Oh, we're pushing Dean's buttons tonight, aren't we, Castiel? Now am I just too in love with this guy or was that a flicker of hope in Cas' eyes as Dean tells him the plans have changed? I adore that it is Uriel that Dean faces off to, but Cas he appeals to.

- It seems Cas is the one in charge here, though I do wonder if that's merely because he is the one with the connection to Dean. If Uriel is a specialist, surely that would make him higher up the chain? I guess it depends on whether your ordinary angel can take a dip into hell or not. I'd love for Dean to question Castiel on why it was him, and not another angel, that pulled him from the pit. I like to think there's a reason why Cas was chosen, though I may be influenced by a fic with that desire.

- Dean looks surprised that Cas gives in. Though I suppose with threatening his brother and considering blowing up a town, Dean doesn't have much to go on to point to Cas' good intentions.

- Do the writers have a vendetta against the Impala this season? They can't crash it again, so they'll make do with horrifying us with product placements and flour (?). Ha, Sam laughs in the background, or should I say Jared?

- Dean once again encourages Sam to keep his faith, despite having little himself. Dean likes Sam to have hope, to believe in a greater good methinks. Interesting, though, that Dean comments there's nothing more dangerous than an asshole on a holy mission, when that's what Dean admitted he thought he was on in 4x05. Could be just a throwaway line, could be a disbelieving remark aimed at himself that he's actually been going along with the angels. This scene is beautiful and one of the few scenes this season that really sees the brothers united, Dean playing the big brother and Sam willing to listen.

- Castiel and Uriel scene *yay arms* I love Cas' faith in Dean, that maybe he will save the seal, and his rebuke of Uriel calling the human's mud monkeys. Again, Cas seems to have the higher authority, though there's a greater sense of ease and equality between them in this scene, perhaps because Cas knows Uriel won't be blowing anyone up. Uriel still appeals to Cas to screw their orders however, like he needs Castiel's consent with the plan before he'll do it.

- Oh it's her! No, it's him! No, it's actually her! Love it, I was actually duped into believing each twist. Did not see that final reveal coming at all. Though one does wonder why it's always siblings that choose to sacrifice/kill the other...

- Sorry, I got a little sidetracked by Sam smearing blood on Dean's face *stares*

- Now that is a big fucking demon, did you see the amount of smoke that came out of the ground? Freaky eyes man. Though no more neck snapping, please, it totally freaks me out.

- Didn't take long for Sam to consider using his powers again, did it? Oh Sammy.

- Wow, that is a shitload of blood! Zombies *glee hands* and these are proper zombies too *double glee hands* oh SPN, you spoil us with witches, ghosts and zombies on Halloween!

- I must admit I was quite surprised when Sam took a swing at Samhain. I thought he'd already convinced himself that only the powers would work, hence why he went off alone. Go Sam for at least trying the conventional way first, shame Dean didn't see you do that.

- It was about here that I started a constant litany of "no, Sam"'s and "oh Sam"'s, complete with bad flaily hands. God, it took so much power his nose bled! The best part of the entire scene was the eye contact between Dean and Sam. I was curious as to why Dean didn't make a move to stop it. The knife was behind Samhain, Dean could easily have grabbed it and killed him before Sam could. Instead, he stood frozen, whether from shock or Sam's powers themselves. Perhaps this is due to an extension of Sam's powers to cover humans now or perhaps Dean has come back with a little demon in him (oh noes, Dean). I just found it odd that Dean would do nothing while Samhain was getting closer and closer to Sam - what if Sam hadn't exorcised him in time? Also also also, I'm not 100% sure, but I think Sam's eyes did go black there. Which is awfully worrying, but at least preferable to yellow. OH, look how devastated Dean is *snuggles both boys close* you need to hug again boys, that's what you need to do, and maybe sob a little together.

- Uriel, you're rather kickass, even if you're a bit of a bastard. I'm totally desperate for a Castiel v Uriel smackdown, where Uriel attempts to kill Sam (and maybe Dean too) and Cas stands in his way. You may come again, too.

- I didn't even think about it being almost the anniversary of Mary's death till Uriel mentioned it.

- OH OH OH! Bad Uriel, BAD! Still, I'm pleased Sam knows. Can't wait to see the fallout from this, and from Sam using his powers again. Wonder how long Sam will wait before he brings it up...

- Was that a laugh? Cas, were you laughing?! *clappy hands* nice development that Dean's no longer jumping when Cas suddenly appears.

- Love their true orders. For all I liked seeing the harder edge of Cas again, this compassionate facet of his personality is much more appealing and intriguing. I like that he cares for the people he's saving, that he feels the need to explain himself to Dean, that he's questioning what's right and what is wrong - and I reckon that development occured when there was the real possibility that he would play a part in the deaths of over 1000 people. This is my favourite treatment of Cas' character since Kripke's in 4x01. So let Uriel be the hammer, Cas can be the softie.

- Nice callback to 3x12, where Dean made the same sort of choice (choosing not to kill innocents for the greater good) and yet failed in the end to accomplish the goal. Everything seems to be pointing to a sacrifice of an innocent life to win this war, and that's been hinted at not just in these two episodes. I guess the question will be, at such a point will Dean do it or will he let the world go to hell to follow the moral code he lives by? I have such an awful feeling that that sacrifice is going to be Sam, and if it is, we're getting hell on earth, people, hell on earth.

- For all I'm sure Dean isn't on board (yet?) with Sam using his powers, I do think we see a slight acceptance of the good Sam can do when Dean acknowledges everyone is still there because of them.

- I hope Dean tells Sam about this. Hearing that at least one of the angels was as righteous as he'd hoped would surely help Sam retain his faith.

- Cas is quite fond of saying "Dean" every five seconds too, much like Sam.

- Excessive staring FTW! And we all thought Sam and Dean were bad for that.

- Know what else I love, that Cas confides in Dean. Is this the start of a tentative friendship?

I seriously loved this episode and found it quite difficult to review, as I kept getting caught up watching it. As I'm sure you can tell, I adore Cas and must say, I'd love to see Uriel again. The fallout from this ep is going to be epic! Lets hope it follows soon after.

How the hell are we at episode 6 already?

First off, I'll admit I was a bit disappointed in this ep as I was expecting a serious one after the hilarity of last week. Yes, there were some pretty somber moments in there, but not to the extent I was hoping for. I name this the Ghostfacers syndrome. HOWEVER I did still enjoy it, so no worries.

- I rather liked that sequence with the Cas clips in the previously. Very well put together, if you ask me...which may or may not be influenced by the glee of seeing Cas when he hasn't been in 3 eps (come on, Kripke man, more Cas!).

- I am so glad this episode turned out to be another daft one, because honestly? Who could take Dean's running facial expressions seriously? Naww, cute doggy, bwahaha.

- What are they doing to Sam's hair?! *holds head in hands* still, pretty boys.

- Haha, Dean has to hold the heart. I love how, despite everything the boys have seen, they're still utterly disgusted by the autopsy.

- Do you think they go out of their way to find tall people for our show? Almost like it's a job requirement (more on that later). On a similar note, why do the boys look so orange in the scene with the Sheriff? Orange, with very pale lips.

- BOYS WALKING IN SYNC!

- The first time I watched the ep, I thought Dean walked towards the teenagers, in the sense that he was concerned for the Impala *facepalm* show, perhaps it's a good thing for me that you're not subtle.

- I wanted the snake dude to burst into, "some evil witches!" Wrong show *sadface*

- As much as I enjoyed all the random animal shots, what was with the random spider shot show?! Not cool dude, SERIOUSLY not cool. Especially when it was such a freaking creepy spider. Even the Bugs spider wasn't as horrible as this one, and that was onscreen for much longer.

- There's something amusing about the way Jensen said the finding-the-wife line. It makes me laugh for some inexplicable reason. The sentence doesn't have particularly funny content, either.

- Sam's WTF faces are wicked.

- HEE! I think Dean should air-drum (?) every episode. Again, Sam's WTF face, especially when Dean puts the donuts in the Impala, are wicked. I also love that Sam doesn't mock Dean or laugh at him pretending to know what ghost sickness is. He just barrels on like he knows, and I'm sure he does, that Dean wouldn't know what it was. It's about here that the episode moves from okay to great for me; I felt it was a bit slow to start.

- An aside note for you all, Dean's extremely pretty in this scene.

- Gamecocks and cornjerkers, BWAHAHA!

- I'm not impressed by Sam's dick theory (and boy, they love that word, don't they). Though to be perfectly honest, I feel like show was trying to tell me Dean was chosen for another reason and I just can't quite figure it out. Would anyone like to enlighten me?

- *spreads arms for Dean* come here, petal. If I had to choose one reason why I like this episode, it would be because of how frickin adorable Dean is. Oh, and how Sam looks after Dean. Save episode 4, show seems to be reinforcing the idea that this will be a general theme this season, which I highly approve of.

- Nice angsty turn, show. The ticking clock was perfect, I had such a flashback to NRFTW when Dean glances at the clock at midnight. My only criticism was that this had such potential to delve into very angsty waters and it didn't, though I would guess they're leaving the hell revelations (OMG) for later on.

- Nawww boys. I love how Sam's concern shines through, not only when he nudges Dean to stop him scratching, but also how he runs after him to the bathroom.

- *snuggles Dean* all episode, strongest impulse.

- Lots and lots of impala!porn in this ep *YAY ARMS*

- Dean is very, very, VERY pretty this ep, and his eyes are awfully green (most notable when he's looking across the impala at Sam).

- OH DEAN! *snuggles so very tight* can I keep you? Please? Look at his face as he grips at that flashlight! I'm thinking this is one of the instances Jared was talking about when Jensen looks about 5.

- OMG HE'S SO FRICKIN CUTE! Even when he screams like a total girl. Best facial expressions EVER.

- Sam's all business now, even when interviewing victims. I meant to say before, but I forgot *g* he's lost quite a bit of that empathy that he used to display when trying to wheedle information out of people. Another change *applauds show* I know I've been whining that I wanted more change, but I'm actually starting to enjoy noting the subtle differences between s3 and s4 Sam.

- Drunk!Dean should visit us more often. Also, can someone help me out and tell me who the young deputy reminds me of? My brain won't work for me! *hearts Sam yanking Dean away*

- Tinfoil rubbing, ewwwww.

- The hospital corridor scene may be my favourite. Sam's hand on Dean's back, Dean's little shake of his head, Sam telling Dean not to scratch, Dean tugging Sam's suit to make him move away from the passing man *loves boys* I adore this switch around of brotherly protectiveness.

- Awwww little kitty!

- I can't decide whether Mr Luther's story is shining light on Sam's current thoughts toward Dean or about himself. On the one hand, Sam may be feeling, like Luther, that a lot of people let Dean down, including himself because he couldn't save him from hell before or after his death. Sam also seeks revenge, as I imagine was the purpose in episode 4 of Sam trying to get that demon to confess where Lilith was, and Luther saying life's too short for hate is perhaps reflective of Sam's choice to give up his powers last week. On the other hand, all the mentions of being the town freak obviously relate to Sam's similar thoughts about himself. The mention of Frank not clearly thinking straight after his wife's death though may be a nod (and perhaps, further reaffirmation of Sam's own justifications) toward Sam using his powers after Dean's death - because he was seriously messed up after losing Dean. This guest star was brilliant, by the way.

- I lied before, Dean's rant on hunting is my favourite scene. I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry during it. They're insane, Dean's annoying, the waitress with the rash, Sam's gassy!

- Dean looks like such a little boy sitting on the couch *snugs*

- WOW! This scene's not my favourite, but it's close. Sam's yellow eyes and echo-y voice! If Sam becomes reborn yed I will scream CALLED IT from the rooftops. I love that Dean's considered this, fears it even. Sam's pretty hot evil, no? Jared plays it so well, though I adore Jensen's expression when Sam lays his hand on Dean's shoulder (pretty close to Castiel's mark, is it not). Though I do wonder what Sam really said in response to Dean worrying that he's going to die.

- Okay, here's a dislike. Sam's so calm when talking to Bobby, and yet Dean's only got two hours left before he will supposedly die. In NRFTW, I was fine with a zen Sam, because Dean was present and I believe he was acting that way as a reassurance to Dean, to keep him calm. Dean's not present here and still, we lack frantic Sam. It's not that I don't think Sam cares as much about Dean as vice versa (well, maybe sometimes, but definitely not in the face of what we've seen this ep), but it just puzzles me how chilled he can be when we know were the situations reversed, Dean would be frantic.

- This week, Bobby speaks Japanese. Next week, his cap will sprout wings and Bobby will airbomb demons with holy water balloons.

- I love how soft Dean's hey is when he picks up the phone.

- It's funny watching the scene with the Sheriff knowing that were Dean normal, he'd totally be kicking the dude's ass.

- Sam's pretty wandering about the warehouse.

- I've read that some think Dean resorts to faith near the end when he grabs the bible. I don't disagree with this assumption, but I'd like to think that it's a madness brought on by the ghost sickness. Though I'm pleased we've seen Dean's faith develop over the last few eps, I'd rather not have him jumping fully on board quite so quickly. Fair enough having faith in Cas, but not wholly in God, not yet.

- OMG! NO! NOT THE CREEPY GIRL *whimpers* devil child, DEVIL CHILD!

- Wow, I can't believe Dean remembers every second of hell. I figured it was just coming back to him in flashes, not that he had it all swimming around in there. Oh Dean. Kripke, you are a wonderfully horrible genius. I can't wait till this is dealt with, but I'm good for waiting it out.

- I want Dean to ask Cas about that. Is his deal broken by Cas ripping him from hell or is he still destined to return when he eventually dies?

- Now I'm unsure. Are we meant to know why Dean got infected or will this be addressed later? ETA: Having just read Kripke's statement (with the spoilers retracted) I'm pleased that we're not supposed to know. Now I'm trying to figure it out what that could be, hmm.

- The entire sequence with Lilith's babooms and Sam fighting the ghost (OMG SOMEONE'S TALLER THAN SAM *GASPS*) was so suspenseful. Yes, some part of me knew they wouldn't kill Dean off (again/so soon), but I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.

- Awesome fade away.

- SINGLE LAYERS, people, SINGLE LAYERS! Wow, the boys are beautiful.

- Naww, he is indeed adorable.

- Wherever they filmed is very scenic. I'd quite like to climb those hills.

- OMG SAM'S EYES! Now did Dean just hallucinate that or did it actually happen? There's more truth to Dean's words than Sam's knows. It's true, by now Sam potentially turning evil is usual and it's comforting that Dean reckons it's nothing he can't handle. By that token, I don't think it's a lie or cover-up of Dean's fear. Saying that, Sam still doesn't know about Dean remembering, so we'll see, won't we?

- I want an icon of that final shot. Pretty, pretty boy.

Overall, twas a slow start, but the second half more than made up for it. Great episode, with Sam playing the big brother, Dean being frickin adorable and revelations about hell. I can't wait to see Sam discovering this, preferably with Dean getting flashes of hell during the day and being completely incapacitated by them, to the extent Sam notices during a hunt and then it all comes spilling out, and Sam meets Cas and begs him to stop them, but Cas can't *takes a breath* I may have thought about this a lot *coughs* I also can't wait till Dean comes properly face-to-face with a demon who'll taunt him about hell. I do believe that'll be the day Sam retakes up his powers.

On the rewatch, I'm thinking 6 may win out...

Oh and on that little surprise we got...Jensen Ackles, I heart you to an unholy degree, even more so when you're a complete and utter dork. Though I am skeptical about it being completely spontaneous what with all the camera angles, I really do hope it was in response to Jared's prank (not banging the hood to get him to stop). I love that you can hear Jared laughing in the background, though I can't make out whether he says I love it or I love him at one point. I need multiple icons of this, yes I do.

I like doing reviews, it's fun :) it's about the only thing (plus the news) I'm having time for at the moment, so sorry that I'm not commenting on your journals. I'm at the stage now where I'd actually like to get back into LJ, but just can't find the time to do so because of work and uni. So basically, thank you so much all who are still commenting and fingers crossed I'll get to do some commenting of my own back soon.

Now, onto the episode!

Thoughts? Who am I kidding?! That should probably be struck out and changed to squee. No seriously, don't expect anything substancial from this review.

- Let us take a moment to fully appreciate this opening sequence (even though I think the first scene is rather disjointed, but we'll skip over that). Funky special credits, with creepy old-style horror music, black and white filming and lightning flashes. Opening over a shot of the Impala doesn't hurt either *claps hands gleefully*

- Sam's concerned about the bigger picture, while Dean's all, "YAY MONSTER HUNT!" My universe has finally realigned itself.

- OMG! So not only do we have the boys in black and white, we have the boys in suits in black and white *GLEE* HOLY-HELL-DEAN Moment One: first shot of him in his suit. Sam's rather pretty too.

- Oh Dean, you have the attention span of a gnat *hearts* I have this entire scene playing in my head where Sam only goes to see Raiders because he knew Dean would have wanted to and he sits through the movie hearing Dean's comments in his head. A masochistic move, but just another way of being close to Dean once he's gone *snuggles Sam* did I mention I love Sam's indulgent smile when Dean runs off for the pretzel?

- HOMG SAM ATE! Sam's eating AND driving the Impala this season...either this is the writer's way of showing how changed Sam is or the apocalypse must really be coming.

- What the hell indeed, Dean. If I hadn't been spoiled, I'd have been rather shocked too. The boys are gorgeous in this scene. Like seriously. Like can't stop staring, seriously.

- Jaime, I liked her. The writers are always trying to create these strong, spunky women to pair with Dean and they've failed miserably every time, save here. While I still believe a mature, older woman who would take care of Dean rather than take him down a notch is the one for him (see: Layla), if we have to have the model the writers are going for, I could live with someone like Jaime. She was cool.

- I like the close-up shot of Dean winking, though I did cringe and shake my head at his cheesy Maverick line *pets him* again with Sam's fond grin. Oh boys, you're normal and adorable and together this week, yay!

- Haha, Ed's hand gestures amuse me. I also suspected him to be Dracula till the real one showed up.

- This scene reminds me so much of Tall Tales when they're interviewing the alien-probed dude *giggles* boys, you have the best facial expressions. Sam, I commend you for not falling apart laughing at Dean's, "uhuh." I did. Though that huge grin you're sporting may be a bit of a giveaway.

- HOLY-HELL-DEAN Moment Two: leaning on the bar smiling at Jaime. These two have chemistry, yes they do.

- A tiny nitpick of mine: I wish Ben Edlund had found a more subtle way of having Sam realise the shapeshifter was Lucy. As soon as he picked up that napkin, I suspected she was our bad guy.

- Also, I love everytime Dean calls Sam some variant of brother *hearts* in fact, you know what, I just love Dean in this scene. The boy's beautiful, what can I say?

- Hee, she turns him down! Yup, I like her.

- It's interesting that Dean came back without any of his scars, save the one Castiel gave him. Again, I wonder if that's still there.

- REHYMENATED?! BWAHAHAHAHA! Oh Sam, I love how amused you are and Dean, I love how you turn to watch Sam walk away.

- Werewolf *yay arms*

- I can't decide whether I preferred Ed's retelling or this girl's. It's so matter of fact, like she didn't just watch her boyfriend be ripped to shreds. Straws ftw! Also, this is my "Sam is pretty" scene.

- FOAM!

- As soon as I heard package, I was chanting, "please let it be a mummy, please let it be a mummy." Ben Edlund, you didn't disappoint. I was ready to give you my fourthborn right here. Though, I gotta say, that Mummy creeped me out!

- "This is stupid." I wholeheartedly agree, Sam. I spent the entire episode gesturing wildly at the screen, muttering, "This is ridiculous." In a good way.

- I may have almost died at Dracula's first line. I reiterate, this is ridiculous.

- CAPE! PEPPER SPRAY! *dies*

- HOLY-HELL-DEAN Moment Three: after punching Dracula. NOM NOM NOM!

- Ewwww, not another shapeshifter. At least this one didn't shed *shudders* I liked that twist, didn't see it coming.

- God, I just, SHOW! Dramatic chase with the billowing cape, an astounding leap over the gate and then...Dracula escapes on a scooter?! Someone else coined this phrase, but I'm going to steal it: Vampire escape on Vespa!

- HOLY-HELL-DEAN Moment Four: Dean's glance to Jaime after Sam reveals what the names mean.

- HOLY-HELL-DEAN Moment Five: sitting behind Jaime looking up at her. Just, GUH Dean! Can I has? PLEASE?

- How much would I like to be the one sliding up to Dean like that? I may hate you a little bit, Jaime. Look at the way his shirt strains when he has his arm up *stares*

- Should we be concerned that Dean came back from hell without his issues? I like this development, that Dean's back on-board with hunting again. I'm just confused as to how to reconcile this with Dean's determination to save his parents in episode three, despite that in doing so, he would remove himself from hunting and leave all the people he'd saved to certain death. I'm guessing that was why we needed that scene with Cas, when Dean confirms that he cares a lot about the consequences. It was to show that it was more to do with saving his parents from heartache, than escaping from hunting, something we only truly understand in hindsight with this scene in 4x05. That's a nice contrast with Dean's motivations in WIAWSNB. He's come far since then. My worry, however, is whether he's somehow been tampered with by Cas/God when leaving hell so as to make him easier to bend to their will (his disillusionment with God AND hunting would have been difficult to deal with) OR whether this is just a development that's been growing within Dean since he woke up in his coffin, especially since episode 2 of this season (which all of a sudden seems a lot more relevant). God Show, I love how everything suddenly has renewed purpose when you look back. I LOVE YOU SUPERNATURAL!

- Kissing! God, Dean's hot when he kisses.

- HAHA! Sam can has massive shadow and dorky reactions!

- What the HELL is Dean wearing?! *GLEE* Does this mean Dracula undressed Dean? Why couldn't we have seen that scene?!

- WHEEZY LAUGH! SLOW MOTION REACH FOR THE HANDLE!

- I just want to note that the guy playing the shapeshifter is magnificent. I can has coupon too? *snorts* they're having pizza.

- YAY Sammy has come to save the day!

- Way to make me feel sorry for your monster, Edlund. Killing people because he's lonely huh? I wonder if that's a subtle nod toward what Sam's been doing, save remove people with demons. It's what I want to come out (see my last reaction post).

- Bwahaha, Sam kicks the door down!

- One does worry that it's the monster's beloved that kills him in the end, and not Sam or Dean...more foreshadowing? *sniffs a little* goodbye, you nutjob. I liked you.

- Dean's kissing again *stares* god, look how smiley and happy he is?! I don't feel like we've had a properly content-with-life Dean in seasons *hearts and snuggles him close*

- *MAD FLAILY HANDS* BOYS! Sam knows what Dean would pick! *MAD FLAILY HANDS* I HEART YOU BEN EDLUND!

All in all, this was such a fantastic episode. Ben Edlund, my fourthborn is yours. This felt like an old season one episode, with the added chemistry and closeness that has developed between the boys throughout the series. For all I prefer the mytharc eps, I didn't know how much I missed the standalones till I watched this - though that could be because this was so fabulous. In conclusion: SQUEE!

I may have developed a bit of an obsession for one Misha Collins and his Castiel. It was bad enough after watching the show (his eyes are so blue), but then all these damn interviews started popping up all over the internet, and well, I knew I was screwed. I think I make my point quite sufficiently by saying I haven't squee-d over someone this much since I discovered Jensen.

"Because that guest star role on Charmed was really the first big part I’d ever had on camera and I was so green, I had no idea what was going on. I was totally overwhelmed and under-qualified and panicked the whole time. There was just so much that was new to me. SPN Review: 4x04

After an episode, I usually have a little sift about to see what others have been saying about the ep - because people are smarter than me and notice things like KAZ 2Y5 - but I've had to stop myself today what with all the negativity floating about. I'd rather like to keep my warm, fuzzy, after-show glow thank you very much!

- Oh Sam. That demon was kinda asking for it there. Did you see the smirk on Ruby's face when Sam exorcised him? I'm hoping that was alluding to a potential Ruby double-cross in the future. It'd be rather disappointing were her motivations actually good. Oh and I'm still rooting for the Lilith theory, considering we still haven't seen a flash of black eyes from Ruby.

- DEAN *YAY ARMS* I'm a little undecided about how I feel about this. On the one hand, yay, the boys aren't keeping secrets from each other and we got messy fallout earlier than I expected. On the other, lying to each other only serves to up the ante and revealing so much early on seems to me like a waste of a good opportunity. I don't understand fandom's need to have the boys divulge EVERYTHING RIGHT THE FUCK NOW OR WE'LL KILL YOU KRIPKE! Where's the drama in that? What I do like is Dean having apparently learned his lesson from Hunted and telling Sam mostly everything, contrasted with Sam bottling quite a few things up. This isn't a negative point on the episode for me actually, just a consideration, perhaps because getting a pay off so soon isn't something we're used to. I may end up being really pleased with such an early reveal should it lead to Sam going behind Dean's back, as I think it might.

- I know I'm about to completely contradict what I just said (see: undecided), but I'm glad that since they brought the possibility of Dean discovering Sam's powers up, they didn't cop out and have him arrive too late, or something.

- The boys' reactions here are exactly what I wanted: Sam's "Oh God" face and the pained fury just rolling off of Dean.

- Haha, at least Dean and Ruby's relationship still fits pattern despite Ruby 2.0; Ruby reveals herself, Dean goes for her. It's interesting to see Dean lunge toward Sam after he shrugs his brother off, instead of returning to his original target. Presumably it's to retrieve the knife, but part of me thinks he was ready to get some of that anger out there.

- Ruby is rather obedient *suspicions increase* you know, Ruby 2.0 isn't bothering me too much at the moment because currently she's assumed the blink-and-you-miss-her role. I imagine her lack of presence and anything resembling acting skills would have me banging my head off the nearest available surface were she in the episodes for longer than three minutes at a time. At least Katie's Ruby was bitchy and actually portrayed contempt for Dean.

- That last look Dean sends Sam's way sways much closer to hurt than anger *snugs Dean* though I do rather feel for Sam too *snugs Sam*

- No way would Dean actually leave, not in a million years. Methinks it was Dean simply making a statement of how upset he was. Tis for the same reason he punches Sam (know that I'm eyerolling over the wank on this), which is why I'm glad he does, just a further illustration of how messed up Dean is over this. There's even lamp destruction (though I did get rather distracted by Dean's amulet catching in his jacket collar)!

- This scene could have been one giant screaming match, and there are not enough words in the world to describe how much I love that instead, the boys took it to a quiet, meaningful level. I was actually tearing up.

- Nice acknowledgment of the time Sam spent without Dean, more of this please Kripke. Though what I'd prefer is having Sam eventually admit turning to his powers as a coping mechanism or a way to eventually save Dean, rather than, "well you were gone, so I needed an alternative hunting method to make up for the lack of you, not because of the lack of you," as it's coming across.

- I love how earnest Sam is here, how much he believes what he's saying and how much he wants Dean to believe it too. Oh and how increasingly upset they both get, oh boys!

- Dean just called Castiel 'Cas'...I may have to draw hearts round this moment forever, though at the moment I'm currently too busy drawing hearts round this scene. Remind me when I'm done, would you? It's strange that Dean seems to have flipped to believing Cas (yes, I am using that now it's canon, and please don't whine so much about it fandom that they don't ever use it again - god, this must be what the Bela and Jo fans felt like) since last week's ep, but then I reckon it was more an appeal to Sam's faith rather than a conversion.

- They both look set to burst into tears when that phone rings. So much for no chick flick moments Dean *snuggles them both and whimpers* oh boys, I say again. My heart just breaks for Sam when he's talking to Travis on the phone.

- GROSS BACK THINGS *squirms*

- OH NOES SAMMY! The moment the words were out about the demon blood, I had my hands covering my mouth. Way to put your foot in it Sam. Oh god, look how upset Dean is. I don't know if I can take the angst, it's been so long I've forgotten how painful it is! *flails*

- Oh gross. As a side note, that raw meat's so red I was convinced it was jelly. Hee, the boys' looks of disgust match mine.

- Haha, awesome dig Dean.

- Thought Travis was cool, nice to see a new face, even if he gets eaten in the end.

- Dean's pretty. Gorgeous shots of him in this scene.

- Were it not for last week's episode, I would have thought the line about it running in the family was a small anvil about Sam's powers. Though I still think the wife being pregnant again, ie. a 30 year cycle, is a nod to the 22 year cycle of the YED.

- OW OW OW OW OW MY HAND! MY HAND!

- I love that despite their ongoing issues, Dean still jumps in to save Sam from potentially insulting Travis over the research thing.

- I'm choosing to step over the anvils, huge as they are (I'm a giraffe, did you not know?). The similarities between Jack and Sam are rather heavy-handed, but thinking of it as a freestanding MOTW, I like it and Jack's plight. That could be because I think the actor playing Jack did a superb job and also partially because the anvils in Heart left me cringing (as did the actress); these, while arguably worse, somehow didn't because the boys were talking about them.

- Hee, Dean's look to Sam on the steak line! I love you Dean!

- Actually, I lied, I'm going to talk about the anvils. We seem to have taken a step back in time here to season two, not only with the issues the boys are talking about but the dynamic between them too. While I absolutely adore the potrayal of Sam here (a Sam reminiscent of that of early season two), I still reserve the right to dislike that he seems unchanged after such a long period without Dean. Yes, he's using his powers, but neither seem to have impacted his character adversely at the moment. It could be argued that using the powers is a sign Sam's changed, but when he's not doing that, he still seems like the Sam we all know from previous seasons.

- I actually couldn't watch the scene between Jack and his wife first time round. I thought he was going to take a chunk out of her!

- On second watch, it kind of annoys me that Sam uses the line that Dean treats him like a freak (though I do love Jared's delivery of "I'm a whole new level of freak"). It seems like a stupid argument, considering all the times Dean's stood by Sam despite of it. Don't get me wrong, I understand where he's coming from considering Dean flips every time the psychic stuff comes up, but surely the more correct thing to say then would be that he knows how much it scares Dean, rather than accuse him of looking at him differently?

- Love the change of expression on Dean's face during Sam's tirade, almost as if he starts to understand a little (as an aside, that green ensemble is doing wonders for Dean). I also like Sam's justification for using the powers. Note that this isn't me contradicting myself again, my issue is with why he started, not why he continued.

- I've just noticed The Forehead is making a prominent appearance in this episode *shies away from it* on a further note, Sam looks crazily taller than Dean in the scene with Jack. Like, more than usual *stares*

- Like the reflection of Jack's eyes in the glass, tis creepy.

- Dean's little laugh as he closes the door makes me grin.

- EWW EWWW EWWW NOT THE NECK! I HATE NECK THINGS! EYUGH! Also, he looks incredibly gross too, what with all the blood and decomposing skin.

- Wow, so not only does he turn evil to save his wife, but he lets her go, despite his transformation. Another anvil show? One does wonder if the turning evil to save Dean is alluding to what Sam will do in the future or what he's already started to do with practicing his powers, if his initial intention was to use them to save Dean. I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I would love Sam to go evil the same way Jack did - not as a slow build, but as a gut reaction to save Dean that tips him over the edge. That way, Sam can be evil for a wee while till it comes to a point where he's faced with the chance to kill Dean and then he can't, because he loves him too much, so he comes back to the good side ~~of the force~~ and ~~doesn't sacrifice himself to save Dean~~ the boys hug. My future!personal!canon, let me show you it. It's totally going to happen *nods* Kripke lied when he said Sam was Luke, he's actually Anakin/Darth Vader (he's totally tall enough for it too) and since Dean's Han Solo, there'll be no sacrificing oneself for one's family DAMMIT!

- God, I love Sam's look of relief when he hears Dean's alive. How many times has it been vice versa, with Dean threatening to break someone if they hurt Sam? Loved seeing this reversed.

- I gotta commend the actor playing Jack again, he's brilliant in this scene. As is Jared.

- I don't quite understand why Sam shuts Dean down when he tries to apologize. Other than OMG SAM DOESN'T WANT TO TALK it doesn't seem like Dean's setting up to fight with him on it again, so his line about not wanting to explain himself doesn't make sense to me. Probably just me, but yeah. ANYWAY, I like that Sam doesn't want to talk, because it's an indication that despite current appearances, he has changed.

- I know that that's supposed to be an artsy shot at the end, but I just think it's weird.

- I don't believe Sam saying he's going to stop, not only because of the way he won't look at Dean when he says it, but also the way he says, "This is my choice." Nope nope nope, not believing that at all. Also, I know the anvils are hinting that Sam won't have a choice in the end, but I'm hoping that he will just like Jack - for good or ill.

Overall, I really liked the episode. Despite my misgivings at such an early climax to the Sam powers storyline and the anvils dropped, I loved the emotion displayed by both boys - twas such a better payoff than having them screaming at one another - and I felt for the MOTW. I think my squee over it has dwindled in rewatching and reading fandom reaction, but overall, it's still getting a thumbs up.

SPN Review: 4x03

This review has been about three days in the making, and I finally finished it tonight (I've been typing bits and pieces in between tutorial prep). Also, I know people on my flist do this on a regular basis, but I watched the ep at 6am on Friday morning...man, what an awesome idea.

*YAY ARMS* *YAY ARMS* *YAY ARMS* *YAY ARMS* *YAY ARMS* *YAY ARMS* I fear this may descend from semi-semi meta thoughts into yay arms and drawing hearts, so you've been warned.

- If you aren't too distracted by the adorableness of Dean sleeping again, I'm going to share my own personal canon with you. See, by the way Dean's lying and all the stuff flung about his bed (even his bag's lying open), methinks Dean fell asleep without meaning to. Considering it's his leather jacket covering him (why would Dean cover himself with his jacket when he could just crawl under the covers), methinks Sam noticed Dean asleep and, not wanting to wake him, covered him up with his jacket. And no, I'm not just saying this to be schmoopy, I really do think it could have happened this way *nods*

- Ruby's car reminds me of Bumbleebee *INTONES TRANSFORMER TUNE WITH ROBOT ARMS* one does wonder that if Ruby's come back, how much time has passed since 4x02?

- Hell flashbacks *yay arms* so glad they're continuing that on, even if it's just a dream for now. I had a moment of horror where I thought Dean was going to wake up upset and Sam wasn't going to be there and then the single manly tear was going to go unnoticed and *whimpers*

- HELLO CASTIEL! Now I know I've read this entrance in a slash fic. In fact I could probably link you to it if I looked hard enough.

- I will offer my fourthborn (?) to anyone who makes an icon of Castiel's fingers touching Dean's forehead with the words "You're doing it wrong".

- The music from the passing car sounded a bit like Back in Black.

- Haha, John totally cares about Sonny and Cher *draws hearts* he also seems like quite a nice guy pre-hunting.

- My first intonation of, "Oh Dean," (and there were many) came when Dean realised he was sitting next to John *pets him*

- Surprise!Castiel. He's awfully pretty and closer to that of Kripke's Castiel, though I'm still missing the innocence. Yet, I'm with Dean in his annoyance and would rather like Castiel to cease going on about stopping something when he later reveals the stopping wasn't in relation to the past, but the future.

- Dean leaning on the Impala *MORE YAY ARMS* there is not enough squee in the world for Dean being the one to choose the Impala. One does wonder if John remembers meeting Dean once his son's grown up enough to resemble his older self and that's the reason why he gives Dean the Impala, because it was always his. Following that train of thought, I wonder how much John deducted of Dean's trip to the past. On the one hand, not much because he never mentioned anything to Dean and surely the John we know would try to save Mary any way he knew how. On the other, perhaps John was sane enough to know not to mess with the past or didn't know enough of what we learned to want to do so.

- I was grinning throughout this scene because of Dean's happy smile. I do love when he's like this, it doesn't happen anywhere near enough *snuggles Dean tight*

- Dean's talking to Sammy *hearts* oh Dean, did I mention I love you? Many have already said it, but I'll reiterate: I love how Sam's presence is interwoven into the plot despite him being in the episode all of three minutes. Last time he was so absent, it was jarring and yet here they've managed to carry it off very nicely *applauds Carver*

- Mary is seriously awesome and totally would have kicked Dean's ass. I'd seen the theory batted around that Mary was a hunter, but man my jaw still dropped when they revealed it. YAY SHOW!

- Jensen's delivery of, "we're practically family," is rather awesome.

- Dean's grin when he knows he's answered correctly *hearts* Mitch is superb, but I'll leave waxing poetical about him till YED shows up.

- DEANA?! SERIOUSLY?! BWAHAHA!

- Dean makes the best faces during the John discussion at the table. Oh, if only they knew. It's amusing in a heartbreaking way.

- Hee, wonder where Dean got his flirty nature from *g*

- Priest!Dean *more YAY ARMS* nice callback to Nightmare. I know most are calling it simple fan service, but considering that episode was the first to start providing some real answers about Sam's powers, I think it was a deliberate hint of what was to come. Clever Show, clever.

- Oh you could just see those yellow eyes coming, couldn't ya?

- 2nd Oh Dean: panic sets in *snugs* John could see the future, hee.

- The scene between Mary and Dean is possibly one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the entire series so far. Dean's reaction to Mary saying the worst thing she could imagine would be her children raised into hunting *breaks* I love the parallels drawn between Sam and Mary, both of them willing to run away for a normal life and both having that ripped away from them by the same demon. It's curious to see in contrast to Dean's desperation to cling to the family members he has left. I still want Sam to tell Dean outright that he wouldn't ever leave him now, not out of guilt (which attempting to save Dean from the deal is tainted with) or in the pursuit of revenge, but simply because he loves his brother. Hell, even a pre-Stanford flashback where Sam asks Dean to come with him would fufill my wish.

- Don't get me started on Dean telling Mary not to get out of bed. Dean hasn't cried in like an age, a break from which I think we needed or I don't think this would have affected me quite as much. Oh Dean. I wonder if Mary ever worked out who Dean was or if she even remembered making that promise, if somewhat belatedly (ie. already pinned to the wall).

- I love Castiel's silences and dramatic disappearances, gives him an otherworldly feel. I also like the WIAWSNB nod too. Dean's willing to sacrifice his chance of happiness to save people, but not that of his parents' (I know that would entail Sam and Dean leading normal lives too, but I don't think that's his focus). It's something we kinda already knew, but it's nice to have it actually stated outriht (see above Sam wish).

- I'm thinking the scene between Elkins and Dean is supposed to be rather tense and important, but Dean's making this ridiculous pouty face the entire time and I just can't take any of it seriously. Though when he looks back over his shoulder at Elkins *flails*

- YED!!! *MAJOR YAY ARMS*

- You went after a demon with a shotgun? I may have to rethink your awesomeness, Samuel.

- The facial expression of YED when he asks Dean about the gun reminds me so much of Fred Lehne's YED that I think Fred had facial reconstruction surgery just to get back on the show.

- I really want to know when Samuel was possessed. The callbacks in this episode are making me incadescent with glee (I might even make a proper list)! Here, a potentially possessed Samuel pays Dean a compliment (at the Walsh's) and then asks for the Colt, precisely how it plays out in Devil's trap with possessed John. Save this time, Dean doesn't work it out until Samuel's eyes flash yellow (I was suspicious when he asked to see the Colt, but I still squealed when YED revealed himself).

- Mitch is, quite simply, fantastic. Someone's been doing their homework; he has the mannerisms and the vocal patterns of not only Fred's YED, but you can see elements of Jeff's too. God I've missed YED, he was just so snarky and made of win.

- Dean's eyes are awfully green.

- That red tape's still driving you mad in forty years, YED, right before Dean kills ya. Sucks to be you. Except not, cos you're awesome.

- YED has an endgame *yay arms* I'm taking it Lilith took up this plan when old yellow eyes died. I'm still not convinced he's gone, especially not now. I've had a theory for quite a while that yellow eyes will be reborn within Sam because of the demonic blood (glad Dean knows about that now) and I say that without any spoilers (and I don't want any, thank you). Still, is it crazy to feel even more excited about the apocalypse now I know it's potentially of YED's design?

- I've always wondered why YED seemed particularly keen to kill Dean in Devil's Trap. I get Sam was special and part of his big plan, but YED appeared to take particular delight in tearing Dean down emotionally and physically. Now we have a reason why, rather than simply thinking YED's a cruel bastard. Couldn't have believed in it much though if he was willing to bring Dean back for the Colt and John's soul, when he could have just stolen the Colt back and let Dean die (which is another thing, I want to find out why YED wanted John's soul, cos there's gotta be a reason - not right now though, we've been given a ton of info and don't want to push my luck).

- Oh wow, talk about family curse. So the deaths didn't start with Mary, but Mary's parents. Interesting, and kinda sad cos those two were wicked.

- HE KILLED JOHN *fish impression* wonder if John found that out and that's how he knew in IMTOD how to save Dean, and also why it was YED he summoned instead of going to a crossroads demon.

- God Show, you're so clever. Mary started it all, she gave the YED access to Sam that started this whole (wonderful) mess and she apologized to him for it way back in episode nine of season one! YED even tells her not to interrupt him and the most awful thing is, Mary still had the hunting know-how that could perhaps have helped save Sam anyway without all the death and the upbringing in hunting. Saying that, I'm a firm believer in the theory that it's Sam's strong connection with Dean that's kept him sane, not evil, all these years so perhaps without that (ala the normal upbringing result in WIAWSNB), there would be no possibility to save Sam anyway.

- So apparently this incest thing runs in the family *squicks*

- Oh Dean, that look as he glances back to Castiel is heartbreaking (nice flutter of wings to announce his entrance). That compassion in Castiel's gaze as he takes Dean's shoulder, that's what I've been wanting to see since episode one and not actually because I'm digging all this Dean/Castiel fic. While I love that Castiel's a warrior and not a cutesy angel, I would like to see him grow to care about Dean, for them to have somewhat of a friendship and for Dean to accept the comfort Castiel offers (minds out of the gutter) while Sam is still distant. So yeah, nice little moment *holds it close*

- Also liked Castiel telling Dean not to be too hard on himself ~~even though he's the reason Dean's being hard on himself in the first place because he can't finish a frickin sentence till the end of the ep~~. I'm pleased Castiel's being straightforward with Dean ~~except when it comes to stopping things~~, letting him in on all the info the angels know is a big thumbs up and is most likely a small anvil to highlight the difference between himself and Ruby.

- Oh you just destroyed your chance at friendship there, Castiel. You just threatened Sammy (I love it). I also love that Castiel doesn't want Dean to kill Sam as I had feared, but save him (are we sure John didn't have a good long chat with Castiel before he was dispatched).

TO BE CONTINUED?! ARE YOU SERIOUS?! This early in the season Kripke?! Oh you cruel, cruel SOB. Caught me by surprise, so's it did, as I wasn't watching the time. Man, that was frickin awesome. YAY for finally getting answers! Can't wait for next week's! No spoilers please.

SPN Review: 4x02

I'll be honest, on first watch I wasn't that impressed. I was enjoying moments as I went along, but was left feeling empty as the credits rolled. I have my reasons (which I'll probably rant about), but my main issue was what I like to call "Folsom-Prison-Blues-Syndrome": being spoiled for some aspect of the plot that has me forming a picture of how the episode will play out and thus being disappointed in the final version when it doesn't match up. I was spoiled back in July for the appearance of Nicki Aycox's Meg in this episode and so envisioned a Devil's-Trap-esque situation with Meg taunting Dean about his time in hell. Remaining unspoiled was probably more of a curse here than a blessing, because I couldn't help thinking what might have been while watching as the plot unfurled quite differently. Still, I managed to dig my squee out on second watch, so I'm thinking it was more my issues that were the problem, rather than the actual ep.

- Wicked music on the recap. Need to download that song.

- I had this crazy moment where I thought the hunter in the teaser was Pamela. Yeah, go figure.

- HI THERE SAM! Wow, we're pretty this week, aren't we? I blame the shirt and the hair *nods* though LOOKEE! Dean has a fitted tee on *YAY ARMS* Dean's pretty too guys, did you notice?

- Okay, here's the first of my issues: gone is the fucked-up Sammy of last week and in his place is a Sam who's completely onboard with Dean being saved by God. One, I refuse to believe Sam would be so normal again so quickly - it's only been three days. I understand why Kripke would make such a move, me being one of the fans that bitched about Dean's apparent personality change at the beginning of s3, but I'd have liked to have seen more adjustment (although maybe we will considering the exchange between Meg and Sam later). Two, after all Sam's been through these past few months and all the changes that have occured (see 4x01), I'm struggling to accept Sam's instant belief in God's intervention. Sam may have kept his faith after Jess and his fathers' deaths, but (and I'm basing this also on Mystery Spot Sam) in both cases we didn't see the reaction that Dean's death evoked in him, not to that extent. I was expecting open disbelief, skepticism at the least, ala Sam in Long Distance Caller. Not approval. At least Dean's still not completely buying it (I do and hope Castiel does turn out to be everything he claims, but that doesn't mean that I want the boys to instantly, not after everything they've been through).

- Which leads me onto another point. Could we please stop giving Miss Gamble the religious episodes please? I for one am thrilled they're exploring the flip side of hell, (angels, God, and all), but feel Sera never manages to write all the God talk as anything but cheesy and cringe-worthy. Again, I feel this not because I'm against them bringing God into the show, but because of the way Sera's script handled the discussion. A different writer at the helm could have transformed that scene into something profound and thought-provoking.

- Look at Dean touching his shoulder at the mention of hell (thank you for pointing it out, willoweese). Wonder if the mark will still be there the next time we see his shoulder.

- New!Ruby is still very unlike Ruby. I'm also still unimpressed by new!Ruby's acting skills. I can't believe I'm typing this, but I might actually come to miss Katie Cassidy *looks semi-horrified* in all fairness, Katie got better as she went along and I took quite a few episodes to warm to her (twas Malleus Maleficarum if I remember rightly) so hopefully the same will be true of Genivieve.

- Ack, see what I mean about Sam? It's in this scene that he's at his most normal. He's disgusted by the body for crying out loud!

- EWWWW I CAN SEE RIBS!

- Sam's driving again?! *feels Dean's temperature* yes, he is hot, and I'm not just talking about when he's sleeping. Though I do worry that Dean's head is hanging out of an open window. A lorry could have passed and scalped him! Dear Sam...

- I thought that was Castiel watching outside the gas station.

- HENDRICKSON! I half wish I hadn't watched the recap so I could have been surprised by this. Awesome to see him again. Also, does this count as the first time Dean saved Sam since he got out of hell?

- The sequence in Bobby's house creeped me out. Yes, I am that easy.

- YAY for concerned!Dean. I like that he shut Sam down before he could wallow in all that guilt, though again, a little too normal a reaction for Sam than I like. Though this could be building up to a blowout about Sam not being able to save people at all, because he wasn't the one to save Dean. Just the way he says, "we got him killed," makes we wonder whether Sam applies the same logic to Dean's death.

- MEG!!! Nicki remains one of, if not, the best actress to guest on the show. "You're supposed to help people Dean, why didn't you help me," was simply heartbreaking. I'm guessing her speech about her little sister was simply to get Dean thinking about the effect his months away had on Sam (there's a look he sends Sam's way in the panic room where I was certain he was going to bring it up and I like to think he bottled out of bringing it up, falling back on the God discussion instead). I'm hoping this leads somewhere Kripke, most likely with the revelation of Sam's powers.

- Whee for smart!Dean shooting the chandelier.

- Panic Room, what a clever idea, Bobby. Never stop being awesome.

- God discussion in the panic room is much better. Maybe the iron keeps out shit writing too? I think I want to read Revelations now.

- I can't explain it, but I love when the boys pass guns to each other. Seriously love it.

- Oh Ronald, you should never have died cos you were awesome too. Not Bobby awesome, but getting there.

- Love that Meg calls Sam on Ruby. Nice touch. And there's the hardened Sam I've been expecting all episode. Good to see you're still lingering. I can't wait till Dean gets a hold of you.

- Wow, way to make Hendrickson and co's deaths that much worse. I liked that twist.

- BROTHER!TOUCHING! Yay for protective!Sam.

- Oh look at the boys sleeping. Aren't they pretty?

- CASTIEL *YAY ARMS* great entrance again. I'm pretty sure I read that kind of appearance in a slash fic. Just in case you're wondering, he is actually that pretty, you didn't embellish the memory over the week between the episodes.

- I love Dean's look after he threatens Castiel. I believe his thoughts are something along the lines of, "Oh shit, I just threatened an angel!" Castiel's answering look *draws hearts* exasperated, dear angel?

- I adore the development of their relationship and Castiel's harder edge here, but I miss the innocence and sincerity that was present last week. Not to mention the modernisation of his speech. I'm going to blame it on him being grumpy and upset after his brothers died and they lost the battle. That last line gave me chills.

- This season is going to be epic. The apocalypse, Lucifer, God, angels? I hope you really bring it Supernatural, I really do.

- Sam's hair flick is really distracting, and not in the good way.

- I like to think Dean tells Sam about the dream with Castiel there. Also, I think it's interesting that Azazeal and Castiel can both enter dreams. Maybe it's an angel thing, considering Azazeal was fallen.

So yes, enjoy the episode better the more I watch it.

SPN Review: 4x01

I didn't really post reviews for SPN last year, mostly because I was too busy screaming, "WHAT IS THIS THING YOU ARE DISGUISING AS MY SHOW, KRIPKE?!" I'm going to try for this season though, provided I don't get too busy.

- They used MY song for the recap! Basically, I sing and dance along to this nearly every Monday when I'm out with my friends - apparently it's a favourite of the place we go to. Ergo, I may have squealed.

- Oh gosh, listen to how hoarse his voice is. Oh Dean. At least he's dirty.

- The new credits are rather awesome. The fire from season two still remains my fave, but this is definitely my second.

- Oh gosh, now he's dirty and half-naked. Kripke, you're spoiling us. Nom nom nom Dean.

- I was rather set on having Dean return broken from hell; I blame all the terrific fic that had portrayed him that way. So when Dean reached for that porn mag, my laughter warred with slight disappointment - I say slight because I can barely fault this episode and I'm also hoping, what with the flashbacks of hell, that the breaking will occur later.

- Dean knows both Sam and Bobby's numbers off by heart!

- I have a huge amount of love for Dean and Bobby's reunion, from the fighting to the hug *sniffs* the best moment has gotta be the holy water though. I expected a joke after that and was pleasantly surprised by Dean's serious response.

- I can't explain it, but I adore the way Dean says, "Well I'm glad he won that one." Also, Dean's awfully pretty in this scene (what? I've been in withdrawal, okay, and this is like my fourth watch. I'm allowed to be shallow.)

- THE HUG *SQUEES* they're both clinging and whimpering and yay! Dean's face after Sam attacks him though *pets him*

- I really like Christie's shirt.

- You know what really gets me though? That pained frown that appears on Sam's face after Dean tells him he doesn't have to apologize.

- EWWW! SAM...AND RUBY...AND EWWWW!

- SAM WORE DEAN'S AMULET *DRAWS A MILLION HEARTS* love Dean's little smile once it's back around his neck.

- Dean's talking to the impala again. I love that even more than a Jason song being a prominent feature in the season opener, though that's pretty cool too.

- Pamela was severely awesome (except for, "BAAWWBBEEEEEEEE," *wide eyes*), so what did you do, show? YOU BURNED HER EYES OUT.

- Sam's expression when he sees the mark on Dean's shoulder *draws more hearts*

- Dean bitchslapped a demon, hee! Smart!Dean and Protective!Sammy for the win (Sam's bed is closest to the door in their room too)!

- Bad Sammy for leaving your sleeping, just-got-out-of-hell-and-potentially-has-a-badass-demon-on-his-tail brother on his own, but it's okay because HOLYKICKASSERY SAM'S USING HIS POWERS TO MAKE PEOPLE VOMIT UP DEMONS! I do not have words for how shiny that was.

- Uh oh, they're hiding stuff from each other again.

- Oh awesome, Ruby's not as gone as I thought she was *yay arms* nice move Kripke, booting Katie and bringing in another actress (hell, that's what some segments of fandom had suggested). Ruby was being awfully nice here though *scratches head* I sense bewitchery ahead.

- Castiel. Aside from being unbelievably pretty, he is frickin awesome! I love his sincerity (see the inclination of his head when Dean thanks him or his utter confusion when Dean doesn't believe him). I may be completely obsessed already *g* he can come again *nods*

- My jaw might have been somewhere around my ankles when he announced he was an angel. This may be the most awesome thing since Kripke actually sent Dean to hell. So Dean's being guided by an angel, while Sam's being tutored by a demon *crosses fingers for it to work out the opposite way*

- Look at those wings, how amazing! I don't believe his wings are black. If you look closely, you can see the beams behind them. Methinks we're just seeing the shadow of his wings, as like Castiel says, mortals can't view his true form - which, by the way, all those who reckon Sam will be able to see it raise your hand now. I'm betting it's not pretty, which is we ain't seeing it at the mo. Either that, or it's going to be so impressive Kripke and co. want to save it for later, as well as letting us stew over whether he's really an angel or not.

- GOD HAS WORK FOR DEAN *SQUEALS*

Now that was a season opener. The phrase "frickin awesome" comes to mind! Man, I'm excited for this season. Are you excited? I'm excited. What awesome ratings too, just shy of 4 million! Bring on next week's!

Black jelly bracelets

So I was skimming through the pictures from the Soapbox Race this morning (homg the boys look hot) and I well, I noticed something a little odd.

May I present Exhibit One: Jensen. Jensen's wearing the black jelly bracelet first spotted at Comic Con this year. For those who don't know, this was something Jared wore for Sandy and he obviously stopped wearing his once they broke up. So no surprises there then, everyone had already squeed over this in July.

But then I noticed something on Exhibit Two: Jared. See, if you look directly above his watch, there's this thin black line (which can be spotted in other pictures, it's just not as clear)...

Tell me I ain't seeing what I think I'm seeing. J2 are NOT wearing matching black jelly bracelets. Thank god I burned my tinhat after seeing the s3 gagreel, and thank god for Danneel or I fear I'd become one of those fans who actually wholeheartedly believe that J2 are fucking.

AND AND AND it has funky subtitles going across it and that man who voices everything and haunting music and old clips mashed with funky landscape-y ones and SQUEE *flaily hands* 20 days, 20 days, 20 days. Did I mention I have a job? I have a job. At Monsoon. It's awesome. I get to dress people and get paid for it, it's like a giant game.

I should be totally squeeing right now cos I'm so desperate to meet Fred, but really? I just feel so disappointed. That was way too big a build-up for two guests that were technically already signed by Rogue Events. Making such a big deal as they did, I was expecting someone big and Wayne didn't pay up, ergo I'm feeling a little underwhelmed.

Not that I'm knocking Wayne and co. at all, or Fred. I'll be super excited about Fred in the morning, but just not right now. Next time, Rogue, please don't build it up like that unless it's Jensen, Jared, JDM, Kripke or Manners :)
